Often, the smaller the scale, the better: 'If real wilderness existed around me, I'd be painting it' he once said, 'but weeds are the wilderness that does exist. Before I ever became an artist I had a dream about walking through weeds and getting electric shocks from them. I was thinking about this when I painted my first weeds in 1976 and showed them surrounded by an aura. 'Unlike most nature artists, I'm quite ignorant about the names of plants. It's something I don't need to know. I'm happy that this business of painting allows me to shamelessly exploit nature, without having to destroy it. I'm even left with the option, if not the duty, to improve on it.' Wagman's horizons have broadened since he was most engrossed in his 'Weed Phase' and skies have become another regular subject, but vegetation is still what most often stirs him. 'To prevent myself from painting in a finicky style, I always paint the smallest possible detail with my largest possible brush. When not painting, I'm an avid TV watcher, mostly cartoons and news, and a reader of art, history and religion. As well, I write poetry and play the stock market.' |
