'Here is an outdoor painting. When I look at a stump, I see a mountain with crags and fissures. The moss I see as trees. I usually paint stumps and rocks in the early spring, when there is not too much else of intrest to paint, also they are then at their most visible. In the summer they tend to be covered up with foliage.'
